Visiting the Operation Wallacea Office - Besuch im Operation Wallacea Buero

On our last 2 days, Hendra, his dad and me drove up to the Operation Wallacea Office near Boston where Steve works. This was a nice trip because the village Old Bolingbroke, the office and the house where we stayed were really remote, quiet and nice. On a walk through the village we saw the ruins of the castle, the church and the pub. The next day, we went back to Oxford and Hendra and Steve went on to Middlesex to visit Hendra's grandparents for one night. On Friday he flew back to England.
We had a wonderful time, and I hope Hendra comes back soon! :-)

Die letzten zwei Tage sind Hendra, sein Vater und ich zum Buero von Operation Wallacea gefahren, wo Steve arbeitet. Es war ein netter Ausflug, da das Dorf Old Bolingbroke, das Buero und das Haus, in dem wir geschlafen haben, sehr abgelegen, ruhig und schoen waren. Auf unserem Spaziergang durch das Dorf haben wir die Burgruinen, die Kirche und den Pub des Dorfes gesehen. Am naechsten Tag sind wir dann zurueck nach Oxford, und Hendra und Steve sind nach Middlesex weitergefahren, um eine Nacht bei Hendra's Grosseltern zu verbringen. Am Freitag ist Hendra dann zurueck nach Jakarta geflogen.
Wir hatten eine wunderschoene Zeit, und ich hoffe, dass Hendra bald wiederkommen kann! :-)

 

 

In London

Last Tuesday we went to London. First we met with Steve and visited the Natural History Museum. Then we had lunch in the Royal Geographic Society. After that we have a sightseeing walk (Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Picadilly Circus) and finally, Hendra and me went to Camden Town for Souvenir Shopping. Hendra tried the typical Indonesian-style bargaining, and guess what, it worked! :-)

Am Dienstag waren wir in London. Wir haben erst Steve getroffen und haben dann das Naturkundemuseum besucht. Dann haben wir in der Ryal Geographic Society Mittag gegessen. Als naechstes haben wir einen kleinen Sightseeing Spaziergang gemacht (Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Picadilly Circus) und schliesslich sind Hendra und ich noch in Camden Town gewesen und haben Andenken gekauft. Hendra hat versucht, Indonesisches Feilschen anzuwenden, und siehe da, es hat geklappt! :-)

From Germany to England - von Deutschland nach England

The whole time in Germany the weather was horrible... grey, cold, rainy. So we left it on Sunday and went to England (but the weather did not improve - what did we think...).
In Germany we visited some more places, for example the river harbour of Wanfried that was renovated as a restaurant. Very nice. Jo's dad picked up his caravan from the workshop and because Hendra is interested in all kind of vehicles, he wanted to join. On Friday we drove to Aachen, where Jo's sister lives. Because Hendra got his international driver's licence in Indonesia he had the pleasure to drive on Germany's famous no speed limit motorway :-)
On Sunday we took the ferry from Calais (France) to Dover (England). We will explore England until Friday when Hendra has to go back to Indonesia.

Das Wetter in Deutschland war die ganze Zeit schrecklich... grau, kalt und regnerisch. Deshalb sind wir am Sonntag nach England abgehauen. Das hat uns wettermaessig aber auch nichts gebracht...
In Deutschland haben wir noch ein paar Sachen besucht, zB den Flusshafen Wanfried. Den hat man renoviert und aus Restaurant aufgemacht. Sehr nett. Jo's Vater hat seinen Wohnwagen von der Werkstatt abgeholt, und da Hendra and allen Fahrzeugen interessiert ist, wollte er dabei sein. Freitag sind wir dann nach Aachen zu Jos Schwester gefahren. Hendra hat sich in Indonesien den internationalen Fuehrerschein besorgt und konnte deshalb mal die deutsche Autobahn ohne Geschwindigkeitsbeschraenkung testen :-)
Sonntag haben wir die Faehre von Calais nach Dover genommen. Bis Freitag, wenn Hendra wieder abreist, werden wir England erkunden.

Geman castles - deutsche Schloesser und Burgen

The last two days we checked out two castles near Jo's hometown. One is castle "Wolfsbrunnen" which Hendra liked because of the wolf :-) The other one is the castle "Burg Hanstein" from the middle age that is actually just a ruin. We are thinking of celebrating our wedding party in Germany there next year. The second castle comes with a nice cozy restaurant in a traditional German old building with beams. On the tour we had one funny moment, when Hendra asked me, what the stripes in the sky are. If we have so many comets? But they were just planes with condensation/vapour trails :-D
Hendra is not only in Germany for fun ;-), he also repaired something of my car which saved us 100 Euros (1,200,000 Rp).
This morning we had a "photoshooting" for some pre-wedding photos. They are not ready yet, but there is a peak (just a screenshot ;-))

In den letzten Tagen haben wir uns zwei Schloesser/Burgen in Jo's Heimat angesehen. Eines is "Schloss Wolfsbrunnen", was Hendra sehr mochte wegen dem Wahrzeichen Wolf :-) Das andere ist Burg Hanstein aus dem Mittelalter, die eigentlich nur eine Ruine ist. Wir ueberlegen unsere Hochzeitsfeier in Deutschland naechstes Jahr dort zu feiern. Bei der Burg ist noch ein Restaurant dabei, ein altes traditionelles Fachwerkhaus. Auf der Fahrt hat Hendra etwas witziges gesagt. Er hat im Himmel Streifen entdeckt und gefragt, was das ist, ob wir so viele Kometen haben? Dabei waren es nur Kondensstreifen vom Flugzeug.
Hendra ist nicht nur zum Spass hier, er hat auch mein Auto repariert, was uns 100 euro gespart hat (1,200,000 Rp).
Heute Morgen hatten wir ein Fotoshooting, fuer die Pre-Wedding Fotos. Sie sind noch nicht bearbeitet, aber hier schon mal ein Vorgeschmack (nur ein Screen Shot ;-))

Family and sightseeing time

Yesterday we went to Fulda, where Jo's aunt, uncle and cousin with wife and son are living. Of course Hendra immediately fell in love with little Luik, especially his blond and soft hair ;-)
We also went to the old city of Fulda, and looked at the castle, the castle gardens, the cathedral, and the old wall of Fulda. My aunt was happy to tell Hendra the stories of Fulda, for example that it was founded in the year 744 with a monastery that was built where the big cathedral is now.
We went into the Cathedral and Hendra was asking why the praying benches are also in front of different holy people. It sounded strange to him that even though catholic Christians have only one god, they pray to different other people as well.

Gestern sind wir nach Fulda gefahren, wo Jo's Tante, Onkel, Cousin mit seiner Frau und Sohn wohnen. Natuerlich war Hendra sofort total vernarrt in den kleinen Luik, vor allem sein blondes, weiches Haar ;-)
Nachmittags sind wir in die Antstadt von Fulda gegangen und haben und das Schloss, den Schlossgarten, den Dom und die alte Stadtmauer von Fulda angeguckt. Meine Tante hat Hendra gerne die Geschichte Fuldas erzaehlt, zB dass Fulda im Jahr 744 gegruendet worden ist, mit einem Kloster, das stand wo heute der Dom ist.
Wir sind in die Kathedrale gegangen und Hendra hat gefragt, warum es Gebetsbaenke vor den heiligen Leuten gibt. Er fand es seltsam, dass katholische Christen, obwohl an viele andere Heilige anbeten, obwohl sie nur einen Gott haben.

What to do when it is raining? - Was machen wir wenn es regnet?

Saturday it rained all day long. We did not do much. In the morning we went shopping for groceries, and Hendra was very amazed about the system of paying for the shopping trolley and then getting the money back when finishing shopping. In the afternoon we went to the hardware store and Hendra bought some silicon for fixing my car.
In the evening, when we suddenly had a butterfly in the house, Hendra told us the Indonesian saying, if a butterfly comes into the house, you will have a visitor soon.
And in deed, in the evening my dad came along, and see what the butterfly did! And it would sit only on my dad, not on anybody else!
We played the game "Settlers of Catan". Of course lucky Hendra ("I am not lucky, I am CLEVER!") won!

Samstag hat es den ganzen Tag geregnet, also haben wir nicht zu viel unternommen. Morgens waren wir einkaufen und Hendra war sehr entzueckt ueber das System mit dem Einkaufswagen, dass man Geld reinstecken muss und danach wieder bekommt. Nachmittags waren wir im Baumarkt und er hat Silikon gekauft, da er etwas an meinem Auto reparieren will.
Abend hatten wir ploetzlich einen Schmetterling im Haus, und Hendra meinte, wenn man in Indonesien einen Schmetterlin im Haus hat, heisst das, dass Besuch kommt. Tataaechlich kam dann mein Papa, und ratet mal, was der Schmetterling getan hat? Er hat sich auf den Papa gesetzt, auf keinen anderen!
Dann haben wir Siedler gespielt. Natuerlich hat Hendra mit seinem Anfaengerglueck gewonnen ("Ich hab kein Glueck, ich bin einfach SCHLAU!", meinte er).

Arrival in Germany - Ankunft in Deutschland

Yesterday Hendra arrived in Germany, 6:40 am in Frankfurt. We met at MacDonalds because I was late, luckily I found him immediately. We go in the car and after Hendra was a bit confused that I do not lock the doors from inside (we dont do that in Germany), we were off to the Germany motorway! It was quite exiting that I drove about 120 km/h almost all the 2.5 hours to my home, and that German motorways have no speed limit :-)
Arrived at home, Hendra unpacked his 20+ kg bag and I learnt that about 2/3 were just presents and he only had a tiny bag with his clothes!!! My family was really impressed! Thank you for the presents, Puji, Steve and Hendra!!!
We first had a long afternoon nap, and in the evening we had a nice German dinner including Hendra's first proper German beer :-)

Gestern ist Hendra um 6:20 in Frankfurt angekommen. Weil ich spaet dran war, haben wir uns bei Mac Donalds getroffen, ich habe ihn auch gluecklicherweise gleich gefunden. Wir sind zum Auto, und nachdem sich Hendra erstmal etwas gewundert hat, warum ich die Knoepfchen nicht runtermache beim Fahren, sind wir auf die Deutsche Autobahn. Es war schon etwas besonderes fuer Hendra, dass ich die 2.5 Stunden nach hause fast nur 120 km/h gefahren bin, und dass es auf Deutschen Autbahnen kein Geschwindigkeitslimit gibt :-)
Zu Hause hat er dann seinen 20+ kg Rucksack ausgepackt und der war 2/3 nur voll mit Geschenken fuer meine Familie und er hatte nur einen kleinen Teil mit seinen eigenen Klamotten. Meine Familie war sehr ueberrascht. Ich dickes Dankeschoen an Hendra's Familie, Steve und Puji!!!
Nachdem wir uns erstmal etwas ausgeruht hatten, gab es dann abends ein schoenes Deutsches Abendbrot mit Hendra's erstem echten Deutschen Bier :-)
